Organic Greens Blend - 6 Grams
Organic Alfalfa Grass
Alfalfa grass is a flowering plant and legume that is known to have a high concentration of the antioxidant pinitol. It has been shown to be capable of enhancing the health and functions of your liver, kidneys, gut, and various other organs, while also reducing inflammation. This has led to it being put in greens powders.
Unfortunately, pinitol and alfalfa grass have both only been proven to offer any health benefits if you eat large quantities of the fresh grass (1). The powdered alfalfa grass present in Kiala Greens Powder therefore cannot be relied upon to be of any real use.
Organic Wheat Grass
Wheat grass is the new sprouts from the top of the wheat plant and studies show it contains very few calories while being high in antioxidants, fiber, minerals, phytonutrients, vitamin a, vitamin b, vitamin c, vitamin e, and vitamin k.
Studies hypothesise that this will allow it to prevent oxidative damage and stress, reduce inflammation, the risk of heart disease, and your cholesterol levels, and help treat arthritis and certain other diseases (2).
The problem is, despite admittedly promising early results, no studies have ever conclusively proven any of these claims. That means the inclusion of wheat grass in Kiala Greens powder is just as likely to do nothing as it is to do you any good.
Organic Barley Grass
Barley grass is rich in essential nutrients and has been consumed for centuries, as it can deliver a range of health benefits, including boosting heart health, accelerating weight loss, and regulating blood sugar and cholesterol levels (3).
The problem is, 5 to 15 grams a day is needed to see these effects. While Kiala Greens tries to use a proprietary blend to hide its ingredient dosages, being the third listed ingredient in a blend that weighs just 6 grams in total means it is impossible for a serving to contain enough barley grass to be of use.
Organic Lemon Juice
Lemon juice has long been known to be capable of providing a range of health benefits, as it is very high in vitamin c. It can boost your skin and colon health, promote better digestion, lower your blood pressure, boost your immune system, accelerate weight loss, and help keep your body properly hydrated.
The issue is, not only do you need to consume a large quantity of lemon juice for it to produce these health benefits, but said benefits have also never been seen when using powdered lemon juice (4). This means its inclusion in Kiala Greens powder in very unlikely to be of any real use.
Organic Kale
Kale is a leafy green or purple cabbage that has been consumed across the globe for centuries, as it is rich in phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals.
These allow it to reduce LDL cholesterol levels, inflammation, and the risk of heart disease, boost your immune system, improve bone and eye health, and both prevent and combat oxidative stress and damage and various chronic diseases and illnesses (5).
Unfortunately, these health benefits are only produced when you consume between 5 and 10 grams of kale per day. While the Kiala Greens proprietary blend tries to hide the dosages present, it weighing just 6 grams and kale's place on the ingredient list mean there can't possibly be enough present to be of any use.
Organic Astragalus
Astragalus is a root extract and anti inflammatory that is proven to boost immunity, heart and liver health and functions, and testosterone production, and lower ldl cholesterol levels. In order to enjoy these benefits, you must consume a minimum of 30 mg of astragalus each day (6).
While the proprietary blend makes it impossible to know exactly how much astragalus is present here, this is the first instance where it is possible that Kiala Greens actually contains an effective dose of a proven ingredient.
Organic Spirulina
Spirulina is a blue green algae that has been used in Asian traditional medicines for decades, as it is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids, minerals, protein, and vitamins and can offer a variety of health benefits.
It boosts metabolism, enhances heart health, improves immune function, fights free radicals, prevents oxidative stress and cell damage, reduces inflammation, harmful bacteria, blood pressure, and blood sugar level, provides appetite suppression, and accelerates weight loss (7).
However, none of these effects will occur unless you consume a minimum of 8 grams of spirulina per day. While Kiala Greens uses a proprietary blend to hide its dosages, the fact that the entire blend weighs just 6 grams means it can't possibly contain enough spirulina to be of any use.
Organic Oat Grass
Oat grass is a long, dense grass that is becoming popular in dietary supplements, due claims that it contains high levels of nutrients, such as fibre, protein, vitamins, and minerals. They say it can improve gut health, skin quality, the production of digestive enzymes, and the function of your immune system.
The problem is, very little scientific research has ever been conducted into the effects of oat grass. That means, while it is possible that it could contain these nutrients and offer some benefits, there is no conclusive evidence that it will be of any use at all in the Kiala Greens powder formula (8).
Organic Chlorella
Chlorella is a type of chlorophyte green algae rich in antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. It can boost your energy levels better than normal sugar, without causing blood sugar spikes, lower your bad cholesterol level, treat chronic diseases, detoxify the body, and enhance your overall health and wellbeing (9).
As no optimal serving size has ever been set for chlorella, it is possible that Kiala Greens features enough to be of use. That said, as it is buried at the very bottom of a proprietary blend weighing 6 grams that has 8 other ingredients, chances are there still isn't enough present to lead to any health improvements.
Organic Coconut Water Powder - 500 MG
Coconut water powder is made from the clear liquid that is found at the centre of a coconut and is rich in electrolytes and minerals like iron, potassium, magnesium, and sodium.
It can keep you hydrated, prevent inflammation, boost energy levels, brain functions, weight loss, and digestion, and prevent and treat certain illnesses and conditions like kidney stones.
The issue is, to produce these effects, you need to consume between 10 and 15 grams of coconut water powder per day (9). With Kiala Greens containing just a fraction of this at 500 mg per serving, it therefore simply is not strong enough to produce the benefits that a proper serving is capable of.
Spectra Antioxidant Blend - 50 MG
Spectra is a patented blend of antioxidants that includes coffee arabica extract, green tea extract, broccoli sprout, onion extract, apple extract, quercetin, tomato, broccoli, camu camu, maltodextrin, acerola extract, acai, turmeric, garlic, basil, oregano, cinnamon, carrot, elderberry, mangosteen, black currant extract, blueberry extract, sweet cherry, raspberry, spinach, chokeberry, kale, blackberry, bilberry extract, Brussels sprout, and sunflower lecithin.
At first glance, Spectra looks to be very useful, as it contains a number of foods like fruits, vegetables, and super greens that are proven to offer health benefits and are common inclusions in greens powders.
Unfortunately, not only are the doses of everything included in Spectra too small to be of any real use, but there are also plenty of ingredients that have no proof they do anything, which is of particular concern in a proprietary blend when you have no idea how much of each is present.
This is why the inclusion of Spectra in a supplement like Kiala Greens is always a red flag, as it is often just a way to get more foods on the label, even if they aren't going to do you any good.
